span>Patients with multiple disc-degeneration leading to intense back pain can now look forward to long-term relief. A new spinal hybrid fusion technique promises faster recovery and less pain. Under this technique, a stiff section of the rod treats degenerated discs, while a welded flexible section extends further to protect adjacent discs. This enables patients to regain mobility faster and enjoy long-term relief from pain. Doctors said the conventional technique currently being used usually results in an estimated 20 per cent of patients requiring more surgery later on. The latest technique was launched worldwide last year, including at Singapore’s Raffles Hospital, which has treated nine patients so far. - CNA/ms<
