CDC Ignored Formaldehyde Warnings
p>According to a House subcommittee report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention failed to act for at least a year on warnings that trailers housing refugees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita contained dangerous levels of formaldehyde. Instead, the CDC demoted the scientist who questioned the initial assessment that the trailers were safe.
p>One year later, FEMA and the CDC acknowledged that formaldehyde levels in the trailers were five times higher than are typically found in new housing. Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer, chronic bronchitis, eye irritation and other ailments.
p>The report was issued only three days after a federal judge in New Orleans ruled that FEMA can be sued by hurricane victims who claim they were exposed to toxic fumes. /p>img src=”wild>/aggbug.aspx?PostID=71141″ width=”1″ height=”1″>br>a runat=”server” href=’/blogs/public_blog/CDC-Ignored-Formaldehyde-Warnings-71141.aspx#comments’> img runat=”server” border=”0″ alt=wild>
