Are there Research to show that pinched nerve occurs?
In short, pinch no as far as we know does not occur but impinged nerve does.
Dr Ed Crelin, PhD. in 1973, teacher of the year from Yale University did a study to find out if indeed pinched nerve occurred according to what some chiropractors claimed as pinched nerve.
He studied 6 cadavers on a full term female who didn’t breathe at birth, female and male who died of respiratory disorders at 1 week, a 35 year old who died of a heart attack, a 78 year old who passed with pneumonia and a 76 year old who died of hepatitis. Without going through all the details of his research, we can summarized by saying that he did 3 experiments using a drill press, push pull gauge and a chain clamp to simulate flexion, traction and rotation to see if indeed any of these forces could indeed cause the bone to pinch on the nerve. Based on what he saw he tried to show the world that pinched nerve was not possible and that the bone could not possibly directly pressed upon the nerve itself.
These studies were done as far as we know to discredit chiropractic. Hence, Dr Crelin’s work was hailed by those who were against chiropractic and used this experiment to discredit the chiropractic profession. As a lay person you might wonder what response we have as chiropractors. Well, if you have some background in human caderver studies, you may know that like any body tissue like meats you get in the grocery stores, that tissue can shrink at death even with preservatives like formalin. We must however acknowledge the fact this research did show us something: subluxation with nerve interference was not caused by a pinched nerve but by nerve impinchment.
